As CEO and Registrar of the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists (NSCP), Beverley leads a talented staff team and provides support and guidance to the NSCP Board to ensure the NSCP fulfills its legislated mandate to govern the practice of pharmacy in Nova Scotia in the interest of optimal health outcomes, keeping protection of the public interest as its sole focus.
Beverley is committed to continually striving for better, and she brings this to her role by leading a regulatory approach that fosters innovation, collaboration, engagement, and continuous improvement in the regulation of pharmacy practice. Most recently, this has included:
Establishing a regulatory sandbox to enable a dynamic scope of practice for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
Creating innovative streamlined licensure pathways for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
Developing the StaffWISE staffing level analysis tool to ensure the staffing level of pharmacies is commensurate with the volume of services they provide.
Other regulatory innovation includes:
The 2018 Wicked Problems in Community Pharmacy Summit, a national forum for multi-stakeholder engagement on the sector’s most difficult issues, which has gone on to become a valued provincial collaborative forum in Nova Scotia.
The development of pharmacy standards for mandatory error reporting and continuous quality improvement in 2011 – the first in Canada. This work was completed in partnership with the SafetyNet Rx research team, whose ongoing work was awarded the Robert L. Wears Patient Safety Leadership Award in 2020.
Provincially, Beverley is chair of the Nova Scotia Prescription Monitoring Board and is past chair of the Nova Scotia Regulated Health Professions Network. Nationally, Beverley is a chair of the Board of the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities.
Prior to joining the NSCP, Beverley directed the provision of continuing education for pharmacists at Dalhousie University Division of Continuing Pharmacy Education. While in this role, she also co-led the Pharmacy Law and Healthcare Ethics Course at Dalhousie College of Pharmacy.
Her professional career has also included:
Practicing as a pharmacist in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Ontario.
Operating a sole proprietorship, Atlantic Relief Pharmacist Services, through which she served as a relief pharmacist for pharmacies across Nova Scotia and in New Brunswick.
Beverley obtained her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from Dalhousie University and, as a lifelong learner, has completed courses in the Master of Public Administration program at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Management, as well as self-directed studies in leadership and strategic management from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Executive Education.
Bev enjoys spending time with her husband, four adult children, and three grandchildren, and balances her passion for good food with an active lifestyle in Canada’s ocean playground.
